ICEF have functioned at the heart of the international education community for over 30 years, helping to bring education providers and agents together through networking events around the globe. The brief was to work alongside internal stakeholders to help re-energise their online presence, before designing their brand new event companion app.

The project began with an audit of ICEF’s latest designs and existing web pages. Problems were identified around page structures, accessibility, and presentation of information in particular. Several sessions with the ICEF were conducted to discuss the problems, their origins and how best to solve them.

Following the audit, I built out wireframes for 7 key pages across the site including a new homepage, improved event pages, event timelines, and registrations forms updated with the latest best practice.

The key focus throughout the design process was making the right information accessible as easily as possible. ICEF have a multitude of audiences, all accessing their site and events for different reasons, as a result, they have a wealth of information they need to provide their users so finding the right way to do this was paramount.

For example, finding the best way to display a timetable of seminars, which room each one is in, when they’re on, who’s speaking, and a description of each seminar across both desktop and mobile in the simplest way possible. The solution was to create a 50/50 split on desktop with the timetable on the left, and the selected seminar’s information on the right side, which would display as a popup on mobile.

After tackling the online experience, I was kept on to handle both the UX and UI for ICEFs new event companion app. Similar to their site, making the right information and functionality available as quickly as possible was the main goal of this project.

The app design was broken down into two main scenarios. The first being the pre-event scenario, when a user may want to browse upcoming events and news. To cater to these users I designed a homepage that put ICEFs events at the very front of the experience, ensuring they can quickly get an overview of ICEF’s event schedule. From here, they can deep-dive into the event page, find out everything they need about that event, and register their interest, all within a minimal timeframe.

The second scenario, and the main reason for this app, is when the user is actually at an event. To make this app as useful as possible I designed features like a ticket tray that puts key event info and the user’s unique QR code a tap away, and a dashboard style experience for the event pages that allows the user to quickly jump between timetables, event programmes, meeting schedules event information packs.

This project came as a result of me building a great working relationship with the client and was a fantastic opportunity to develop both my UX and UI skills.
